Mandala of Medicine Buddha. A mandala is the purified environment of a buddha. Medicine Buddha is one of many buddhas who have attained the state of perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. The enlightened mind has eliminated all negativity and perfected all positive qualities.

Medicine Buddha's blue sky-colored holy body signifies omniscient wisdom and compassion as vast as limitless space and is particularly associated with healing both mental and physical suffering. Making a connection with him, practicing meditation, reciting his mantra or even just saying his name helps us achieve our potential for ultimate healing.

Victory Over Mara Card  $2.25 each

Front of card                                                                              Back of card

The text on the back of the card reads:
Victory over Mara. On the full moon of the fourth lunar month, the Buddha-to-be sat under the bodhi tree vowing not to rise until attaining enlightenment. Throughout the night, the Bodhisattva battled with the Lord of Illusion - Mara - in all his many forms.

"Daughters of Mara" appeared as ravishing young maidens, begging the Bodhisattva to return to the life of pleasure, but the Buddha-to-be saw only ugly, old women, bent like bows and leaning on walking sticks.

Mara then ordered his army to attack the Bodhisattva with spears, arrows, hatchets, flaming swords, and a spiked wheel of fire. Yet whenever any of the weapons came near the Bodhisattva, they turned into a gentle rain of flowers.

Asserting that the seat used by all buddhas on the day of their enlightenment belonged to him, the Bodhisattva touched the earth with his right hand, calling the Earth Goddess as his witness. The earth trembled six times and the Earth Goddess appeared. "O Greatest of Beings, you have spoken truly. You will achieve the highest accomplishment.

"Hearing this, Mara and his army fled like jackals before the lion's roar. The Buddha showed the aspect of attaining full enlightenment at dawn.

The four Maras are the Mara of Death, the Mara of Mental Afflictions, the Mara of the Aggregates, and the Mara of the Heavenly Son (Desire).

The text on the back of the card reads:
Statues of the Eight Medicine Buddhas at Land of Medicine Buddha.
The eight Medicine Buddhas are among many buddhas who have attained the state of perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. The enlightened mind has eliminated all negativity and perfected all positive qualities. Many eons ago, seven bodhisattvas strongly prayed for the temporal and ultimate happiness of all sentient beings, and that their names would have the power to heal both the mental and physical illness of sentient beings. They vowed that their prayers would be actualized during these times when the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha are in decline. How do these prayers work? One of the ten powers of a buddha is the power of prayer, which means that all the prayers that they make are fulfilled. These seven bodhisattvas attained full enlightenment, and along with Shakyamuni Buddha, became known as the eight Medicine Buddhas.
