KHENSUR RINPOCHE JAMPA TEGCHOG
at Land of Medicine Buddha

Greetings Dharma Friends,

Finally our prayers and efforts have created the cause for Land of Medicine Buddha to host Khensur Jampa Tegchog!   Khensur Rinpoche’s visit to the Center has been in the “pipeline” for nearly two years, with a few obstacles along the way, but at last  Rinpoche and Ven Steve has arrived at Land of Medicine Buddha.

Khensur Rinpoche is a most revered and powerful teacher and is the teacher of many of our senior Western Sangha & students, making Rinpoche like our “Grand Teacher”.

Khensur Jampa Tegchog was born in 1930 and became a monk at the age of eight.  He fled Tibet for India in 1959 after the Communist Chinese occupation, stayed in a refugee camp for several years, obtained his Acharya Degree and taught in Varanasi, taught in the West for many years and from 1993 - 2000 was the Abbot of Sera Je Monastery in South India (no small job!).  Since then Rinpoche has spent time at Sera Je and traveling to many western countries to teach.

Rinpoche is coming to Land of Medicine Buddha at the request of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who advised us to request Khensur Rinpoche to eventually teach “the more difficult” subjects of the Basic Program.

Our own visiting teacher, Ven Steve Carlier, has been translating for Khensur Rinpoche for nearly ten years now, and will be translating here at Land of Medicine Buddha.

For a preview of Khensur Rinpoche’s teachings:
our Bookstore has copies of Rinpoche’s books:
“The Kindness of Others” – a free Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive book
“Transforming the Heart – the Buddhist Way to Joy and Courage” (extremely inspiring)

WE DO NEED YOUR HELP TO HOST THIS PRECIOUS TEACHER!
Land of Medicine Buddha cannot do this on our own!!

· Lama Care fund - Donations to our special "Lama Care" fund for looking after Khensur Rinpoche and Ven Steve (and Rinpoche's tibetan attendant when he gets his visa) are really appreciated. You can donate online (see our DonateNow button) or make checks payable to LMB and put "Lama Care" in the note line.

Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life
A Commentary on the Bodhicharyavatara

Teaching by Khensur Jampa Tegchog Rinpoche
Mid February
- April 10
Mondays and Thursdays, 7pm

This text, written by the great Bodhisattva Shantideva as a personal meditation on the bodhisattva's path, is one of the most amazing texts that has ever been written in this world, detailing how to gain a heartfelt determination to achieve enlightenment for the sake of all the mother sentient beings, and then based on that how to practice the bodhisattva's way of life, summarized as the six perfections of generosity, discipline, patience, enthusiasm, concentration & wisdom.

NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS.
However, the center can only exist through the kind support of our visitors.
Donations are welcome. Work trade is also available.

Foundation of All Good Qualities
Teaching by Khensur Jampa Tegchog Rinpoche
Mid February - April 13
Sundays, 10.30am

The Stages of the Path (Lam Rim) explains how all the Buddha's teachings fit together into our meditation practice, and how that fits into our daily life. Finding out about the Lam Rim means finding out how to make every moment of ones life and everything one does useful for others. The "Foundation of All Good Qualities" is a classic lam.rim text by Je Tsong Khapa, renowned scholar and practitioner from Tibet in the 14th century. Composed of fourteen stanzas of instructions, it is organised in accordance with the stages of practices from the initial to advance levels of motivation. A rare opportunity to learn from a great master. Recommended for new and old students alike.

The Path to Awakening
Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi
Feb 17 – April 13, 5 – 6.30pm
Venue: Community Church of the Monterey Peninsula -
4590 Carmel Valley Rd, Carmel, CA 93923

Have you been curious about Buddhist practice, but don't know where to begin? Have you attended Buddhist teachings, but don’t know how to meditate on the subjects you’ve studied? This class will be based on the “Stages of the Path” (lamrim) tradition of Tibetan Buddhism which was developed as a synthesis of main subject matter of all the sutras taught by the Buddha. Subjects include impermanence, karma, death and rebirth, loving-kindness, compassion and the awakening mind (bodhicitta), the ultimate nature of reality, and more. Include lectures, guided meditations, discussion periods, and experiential homework assignments. You will also learn the fundamentals of Buddhist meditation and the tools you’ll need to begin a daily meditation practice.

Tenzin Chogkyi (formerly Petra McWilliams) became interested in meditation after reading Be Here Now and Autobiography of a Yogi in the early '70's. For the next 30 years, her spiritual path was meandering and haphazard, and included several dead ends, until she bought a one-way ticket to India in early 1991 with the intention of meeting His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She became a student not only of His Holiness, but also of Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche and Lama Zopa Rinpoche during the year she spent studying at Tushita Retreat Center in Dharamsala and Kopan Monastery. In late 1991, she was asked by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to come back to the US to become the co-director of Vajrapani Institute in California. In 1995, she began working at FPMT International Office, first as co-director and then later as center services coordinator. In early 2000, she began a long, solitary retreat that lasted 6 ½ years. Since emerging from retreat in the summer of 2006, she has been living at Land of Medicine Buddha, assisting with various aspects of the spiritual program, and readjusting to the world. Tenzin Chogkyi decided to become ordained in the third year of her long retreat, and then left retreat for a quick trip to India in 2004 for novice ordination with His Holiness.

Through lively interaction and discussion, learn how to make these ideas tangible for the improvement of one’s everyday life.

Venerable Choden Rinpoche

A series of 12 Palden Lhamo jenangs
Thursday & Friday, April 24 & 25 at 7pm
Saturday & Sunday, April 26 & 27 at 2.30pm
REGISTRATION FORM
Palden Lhamo is a female Buddha. She is Tara in the form of a fierce protector deity. Dharma protectors are a "class" of Buddhas appearing in a wrathful form to protect the Dharma and the practitioners. As practitioners we call on them for assistance and protection (Yidam dieties we practice to gain realizations and Dakinis for bestowal of siddhis).

Jenang:
A jenang is a rite of permission received based upon having previously received a full empowerment. Very similar to an empowerment a jenang is generally a shorter ritual than a full empowerment and allows the participants to renew their vows and the permission to practice the particular sadhana ("means of accomplishment" - or meditation manual) of the deity.

Prerequisites:
To take the jenangs as a participator one will have to have received an empowerment in the highest yoga tantra class (such as Guhyasamaja, Yamantaka, Heruka, Kalachakra, etc.). Further commitments (such as mantra recitation) have yet to be confirmed and will be posted here as soon as possible.

Blessings:
There is a possibility that Rinpoche may open up the jenangs to observers to receive blessings (not taking the rites of permission). That is yet to be confirmed.

Lam Rim Chen Mo: "How to Develop Bodhicitta"
May 1-4
May 8-11
Thursdays & Fridays at 7pm
Saturdays & Sundays at 2.30pm
REGISTRATION FORM
The Lam Rim Chenmo is considered to be one of the most important texts in the Gelugpa School of Tiebtan Buddhism. Not only is it the basis for higher tantric practice, it provides a clear and precise path to enlightenment in gradual stages from beginning to end. Choden Rinpoche has kindly been visiting us since 2001 teaching extensively on this crucial text. This year he will pick up again at the chapter on Bodhichitta (the altruistic motivation to become a fully enlightened Buddha in order to best lead all beings out of suffering and in to enlightenment).

Lama Tsongkhapa was the "founder" of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. He was a great scholar as well as a greatly accomplished master and is thought by many to be the "second Buddha". He was extraordinarily prolific in his works writing many volumes of texts and commentaries, of which, the Lam Rim Chenmo is held dearest by many.

Venerable Choden Rinpoche Biography:

Read more about Venerable Choden Rinpoche HERE

Born in 1933 in Eastern Tibet, Choden Rinpoche was recognized at age three as an important incarnate lama, and ordained by Pabongka Rinpoche at the age of six. He entered Sera Je Monastery when he was fifteen, where he mastered all the philosophical teachings required for the highest monastic title of Geshe Lharampa. Choden Rinpoche was one of the two Sera Je lamas selected to debate with His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama during His Holiness' examination for the geshe degree.

When the Communist Chinese invaded Tibet in 1959, Choden Rinpoche was arrested and jailed for several months.  After his release, Rinpoche went into solitary retreat for 19 years. He never left his tiny, dark room in Lhasa for twenty years. In 1985 he was allowed to leave Tibet for India. Since then he has taught thousands of students at Sera Je monastery in South India, and in Dharma centers around the world.

Choden Rinpoche is regarded as one of the great masters of the day, and is particularly famed for his pure moral conduct. He has taught worldwide, and at the FPMT Centers at Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s request. His great insight into the Dharma and his peerless and compassionate conduct have inspired many students in the West to follow in his example to take ordination vows.

The Essence of Wisdom:
the Heart Sutra and the Five Paths

By Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi
Wednesday, May 21, 28, June 4, 11, 18 at 7pm

In most Mahayana traditions, the Heart Sutra is recited every day either as a daily practice or as a preliminary to teachings. Many of us may have recited this sutra for years, but have little understanding of its meaning.

The Heart Sutra has two levels of meaning. Explicitly, it explains the perfection of wisdom, the teachings on emptiness, the ultimate nature of reality. On a deeper level, the sutra explains the progressive stages of spiritual development eventually culminating in the attainment of full enlightenment: the Five Paths.

Join us for an explanation of the outer and inner levels of the Heart Sutra in this five-week class which will include discourses, discussion, and meditation.

Prerequisites:    This course will be taught at the intermediate level.

Participants should have some familiarity with basic Buddhist philosophy in order to get the most out of the class.

Suggested reading: Essence of the Heart Sutra by His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Wisdom Publications, 2002)

Tenzin Chogkyi (formerly Petra McWilliams) became interested in meditation after reading Be Here Now and Autobiography of a Yogi in the early '70's. Ancient wisdom for modern mind and Life
With Nawang Khechog
Sunday, June 1, 2 – 5pm

At the age of 13 Nawang Khechog was ordained as Tibetan Buddhist monk and later he became a (kugyer Tszaam-pa) hermit meditator personally sponsored by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Nawang also received personal guidance and advices from His Holiness during his hermit meditator period for 4 years.

Living and teaching in the west last 20 years, Nawang has developed an accessible and relevant way of teaching the essence of ancient Buddhist teachings to the modern mind and way of life. Most of his inspiration are drawn from the Dharma teachings he received from the Dalai Lama over the last 30 years.

Subjects include how to cultivate universal compassion and infinite love to all beings, how to realize the interdependent nature of all realities, how to transcend and overcome anger and emotional sufferings. The program will also include walking meditation with Eight Verses of Mind Training and the tong.len, a practice of universal love and compassion by taking in all the suffering of all beings and giving out all the happiness and merits. This is a practice Nawang used during his deadly accident last year which helped him overcome pain when he was not given painkillers because of his critical injuries.

Regular Ongoing Practices

Medicine Buddha Puja

8:00am - 9:00am, Daily

Prayers made to the Eight Medicine Buddhas are especially powerful because of the extensive vows they took to benefit sentient beings. In this beautiful practice, we recite names of the Buddhas, make offerings to them and chant the mantra so as to invoke their blessings. An extensive dedications follows, for people with health problems, business successes and specific requests.

If you would like us to dedicate for a specific person or project, please contact us. We request a donation for this service, towards the offerings for the puja as well as Sangha Support at Land of Medicine Buddha. Please give your contribution and dedication to the office.

"Medicine Buddha practice is so precious. You can do Medicine Buddha puja for any purpose, any problem, anything!" Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche, LMB, July 2001.

Making offering prayers to the Medicine Buddhas is called "encompassing all the Buddhas". This means that offering the seven-limb practice is the same as offering to numberless Buddhas, bringing numberless, inconceivable merit like the limitless sky! The special mantra of Medicine Buddha quickly actualizes prayers that the Medicine Buddhas made in the past, to bring happiness to beings by bringing causes for enlightenment, pacifying problems, fulfilling good wishes, and especially to help those who are troubled by illness. Medicine Buddha practice is extremely powerful and beneficial for the sick and dying, as well as those who have already passed away, and will help you bring deep and profound benefits to others with your chosen healing method.

Please let us know if you would like to add someone in need of prayer to the dedication prayer list, which we offer at the end of each daily puja. Dedications for people who have died will be made for the 49 days following their death. Please remember to let us know the date of death.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche's advice about Earthquake Possibility in California

Rinpoche says it is difficult to stop an earthquake but things can be done to minimize it.
1 Taking 8 Mahayana Precepts
2 Reciting the Ksitigarbha mantra as much as possible (see below) as well as hanging a picture of Ksitigarbha (available at Land of Medicine Buddha) in a prominent place in your house. Click HERE to Download the photo.  Click HERE to Download the mantra and Prayer.
3 Reciting the requesting prayer to Padmasambavha. Click HERE to download the photo. Click HERE to Download the Prayer.

There are also 2 practices which will be done by qualified monks:
1 A fire puja
2 Reciting of the Kangyur, two times

Land of Medicine Buddha and Vajrapani Institute are organizing for these two practices to be performed at the Monasteries in India and Nepal. However, we would really appreciate donations to cover the costs of these Practices.

Rinpoche is advising us how to prevent and lessen any damage, - the practices need to be done as much as possible and as widely as possible. This information is not to cultivate fear, but to help us to prepare.

Rinpoche said that we need to let as many people as possible know about the practices they can do to help reduce the effects of an earthquake, even if they aren't Buddhist, because no one wants to suffer. Rinpoche also said that its better to do everything as soon as possible and to cultivate as many people as possible to participate because an earthquake can happen at any time and it would be very unfortunate if we didn't do these things in time.

Here are the mantras mentioned above:

 Ksitigarbha mantras:

Long version:

Tayata muni more/muni gha bhe/muni ki li dha ye/muni rogi ba tza  le/muni hali de/muni gha me shu bha khye/mirla bhag/khe bhaa la la  bhag khye/so ri kirta tor na kir tsa le/bha tag sha kir te/ku ku la  mir le/ ava khya sa re/er ha li le bha/muni bhaa thaba soha

Short version:

om ah kshiti garbha thlim hum (Sanskrit)

om ah khyiti garbha thaleng hung (Tibetan transliteration)

Click HERE to Download the photos.  Click HERE to Download the full mantra and Prayer.

 Padmasambavha requesting prayer:

 Precious guru, embodiment of all buddhas of the three times;
 Great bliss, the lord of all accomplishments;
 Wrathful power, who dispels all hindrances and subdues demons;
 Pray bestow your blessings.
Please remove the outer, inner and secret obstacles and grant your
 blessing to accomplish wishes spontaneously.

 In Tibetan:

Du sum sang gyay guru rinpoche
Ngo drup kun dak de wa chen poi zhap
Bar chad kun sel dud dul drak pos tsal
Sol wa deb so jyin gyiy lap tu sol
Chyi nang sang wai bar chad zhi wa dang
Sam pa lhun gyi drup par jyin gyi lob

Click HERE to download the photo. Click HERE to Download the Prayer.

Again, please note that this information is not to cultivate fear, but to help us prepare as much as possible.
